What are people's thoughts? Anyone else been out here before? My brother, dad, and I were out there today for several hours exploring, and doing a little fishing here and there, since it was our first time out. (He's going to post some pics and report I believe) All I can say is, what an absolutely amazing body of water, and geographical landscape. I'd wager it is just as beautiful as the Apple River, though, I have never been there, only seen the pictures. Amazing that I haven't heard more about this river. It is beautiful out there, and...as a plus...there seems to be a whole lot of fish to be caught. Diverse river, for sure. A whole bunch of different species, and they all seem to be abundant.
The rock shelf bottoms remind me a lot of the Wisconsin River, and targetting those smallies is very similiar as well. Need heavier test though to deal with the snags. Those jigs just don't want to come out from under the rock shelfs once stuck, no matter what you do. Excellent depth variations, with tons of great water to fish. We found stretches with water that was probably 6-14 feet deep, with STEEP ledges. Not very good for wading, but great for canoeing or kayaking. Quickly realized we couldn't wade more than a 100 foot stretch of the river in that area. Moved to a different access point, and found a whole bunch of 1-3 foot water and rapids, with deep holes right next to it. Lots of eddies, slack water, fast water, HUGE rocks that create excellent ambush points for predator fish, just a great river all around. I have a feeling I'm going to be fishing this river a LOT more this summer. We only just skimmed the surface of this amazing body of water and I am already dying to get back there and fish some more.

Re: Mazon River
Left my response on Andrews post.
It would be well worth exploring and I never went too far down stream from Mazonia. It didn't look like that.
