Thoughts on Steinbeck

Post by Special Ed »

Writing my Eng 102 final on Steinbeck. I don't really have a choice, everyone else is doing Martin Luther King. Not sure if that says anything about the cultural diversity of my class (or the lack there-of)......

Basically I am taking Grapes, Mice, and East or Eden, and writing a Biographical sketch of J. Steinbeck as an author. His influences, his politics, and his audience will be my main talking points.

Does anyone have any personal or educational information to offer me? I'm not looking for someone to write my paper, but I am not the best at critical reading, and sometimes I totally miss the "big picture" when reading complex works by re-known authors.

Ken,

I wanted to do Miller after reading your reply, but he was not one of my choices. I had to write it on someone who we have discussed in class, and while he is in my text, we didn't specifically go over any of his work.

Thanks for any help guys.

My problem has always been that I remember ideas more than words.
I barely remember titles of the books I read.
Steinbeck was always one of the ones I struggled through. Took two years of English lit while doing the art thing, just in case I wanted to switch and become an professor some where. Problem remembering words kept me from doing that.

Go watch the movie, East of Eden. James Dean, Julie Harris (absolutely beautiful in this and probably one of the most under rated actresses of her time).

Read that book and watch that movie.

As for Miller, highly recommend you do that on your own. Don't start with the ones everyone will recommend . . . Tropic of Cancer. Not the best. So many are so much better. I'll get you a list.
