Apple River

Post by Ken G »

Fly rod or spinning gear, which would you use.

I catch more on spinning gear, but I've fished a stretch with the fly rod and caught 35 smallies.

Deeper spots are easier with spinning gear.

When the fish are on, they hit everything.

Which is it?

Sometimes fly rods seem like a lot of wasted energy. I'm basically making two or more casts for every one. One behind me that is useless and then the one where I want it to be if it gets there. If I make a false cast or two, I'm making 6 casts to put a lure in a spot that I could have achieved with a simple flick of the wrist.

Plus the big fish get worn out on a fly rod because it takes too long to land them. I don't like wearing out a nice fish. Lowers it's survival rate.

Have you learned nothing from my creek reports? :P

You write creek reports?

:P

I'll take a look at the creek you suggested Ken. I'll give it an hour to convince me to stay til dark. If I didn't intend on relaxing at the bottom of a tall bottle of Double IPA at the end of the day, I'd be happy with a long walk through the woods. However, there are a bunch of kids that think they can "out honey-hole" this old man on their site. 8-) I think it's about time I show them what a real fish looks like.

There's a kid site? I must have forgotten about it. :o

All creeks produce relative to the time spent on them. Some better than others.

You can never fish the same river twice, by the time you get back it's not the same river.

Went today. Perfect water level, slightly stained water which is good, had to struggle to catch fish. Which is not good and very unusual. This time of year and with the river in good shape, years past it would have been a 50 fish or more day.

Not today. It figures.
