That's Odd

Post by Ken G »

I distinctly remember typing up that I was off Monday and going to hit Hoover Forest Preserve in the morning. Gates open at 8, but I'll be there earlier waiting to see if they open early.

Northeast corner, hike to the river, fish down the river, hike back to the care. A bit of a death march, but the water is down and I've been meaning to do this for years.

If any one is out and about, I'll be there. Figure on fishing till noon or so.

I must have forgot to hit submit on the last one, unless I put it on another site. I must be tired.

Either that or you are just getting old.

No Ken you are not loosing it, I saw that whole thing about Hoover that you posted but i cant seem to find it either.

I made it out to Les Arends yesterday morning. Started out just across from the lot down in a spot that has produced for me before with nothing not even a hit. Downstream a little further is a nice current break with a pile of rocks with what looks to be a 4x4 laying lengthwise in the break. That is where i caught my only smallie, a decent 14" who put up a nice fight running me into some branches. Good thing for powerpro. I was going to keep wading downstream but just wasnt feeling it so went back to my car and moved down a lot and tried Mill Creek. When i got there i saw the creek was a little too stained for my liking so i then went down to North Aurora.

I have only fished N.A. when the water was high so i didnt know what to expect. At this point I only had about an hour left to fish so I only fished the dam area. There were some nice current breaks in this area landing a dink smallie right off the bat. I waded my way my in and around all the bridge pilings picking everything apart and got 2 more dinks.

It was nice to get out since the last time I fished by myself let along the fox has been over 3 months. I belive the last time was with Ken at Saw-wee-kee. Hopefully I will be able to make it out a little more frequently in the coming months as the fishing should start to get real good now.
You can never fish the same river twice, by the time you get back it's not the same river.

At least getting old beats the hell out of the alternative.

Matt, just because you didn't like the stained water doesn't mean the fish cared. I would have fished it. If you get the time go do it again. The fish are there, it's been consistent for 10 years. Only time is running out.

Hit a small stretch of Big and Little Rock on Labor Day. Crystal clear and devoid of fish. Happens every year the first week of September. There's something different about Mill Creek. I think it's Mooseheart Lake. Keeps the water warmer and I think the fish like it.

As for getting old Norm, I think you and I prove we can still out do the pups when it comes to shear tenacity in fishing and exploring. There are some things even age can't stop, for now.

Give me stained over clear any day of the week. i'll take chocolate milk water over ultra clear.

Ken

The only downside is there is more of a physical price to be paid for those all day treks off the beaten path. They are still worth it, just for the spiritual value.
