Desplaines 10/19/08

Some like it, some don't. If you're fishing its major tributary, Salt Creek, leave those posts here.

Desplaines 10/19/08

Post by MattC »

Got to the river in lyons at about 9am, river is about back to normal level. I really havent waded the river since that huge flood and the river has changed a lot. Started off throwing a Diawa Peanut and third cast landed this little guy.

A couple more hours of casting practice with nothing else to show for it. As I was leaving casting to shore landed this dink

Since the colder weather is here I will mostly be targeting walleyes and saugers at night. Should be getting out a couple times in the next week hopefully I will have something to report.

Hell man, skip fishing for them at night and just go on overcast days. Pretty much the same result. Come to think of it, I've caught my biggest walleye mid day under bright blue skies. Go figure.

Fished that stretch of the Des Plaines a couple of times a long time ago. It's always been known for its pike and walleye.

So where you off to next? You're moving around like I used to. Fox in Elgin, South Elgin, Lyons . . .

I say, below Shorewood dam on the DuPage. Only did that once a long time ago. It's gotta be good this time of year.

Not sure i want to try your recommendation on Indian Trail Road or maybe Montgomery, its been getting alot colder lately nights into the high 30's. Do you think its about that time to switch to minnows and concentrate on the areas of the crap plants? Probably wont be able to make it to the fox for a couple weeks so will be mainly fishing the Desplaines since it is so close to my house. Hopefully I will have some walleye and sauger reports in the near future. I dont know what it is with the Desplaines i can only seen to catch walleyes from sunset into the night, i have tried plenty during the day and have yet to have any luck, thats alright its getting darker earlier so everythings good.

You may want to consider Indian Trail anyway. Bring a bucket of minnows and concentrate on the area in front of the water plant on the east side. The closer to the wall the better, then work your way out. I've done this well into November at that spot and have done pretty good.

Also caught my biggest walleye out of the river here. So you just never know.

Almost got hypothermia once doing that. Stood in the same spot about 30 feet out from where the limestone wall meets the concrete wall and in a little over an hour picked up 35 smallies. Took hours to get the feeling back in my legs from standing still so long and I was wearing 3mm neoprenes.

Also, many years ago the weather stayed nice throughout November. Fished the pool below the old broken Funway dam and below the North Aurora dam. The water never went below 45 degrees. Between there and North Aurora and many buckets of minnows, I picked up 250 smallies for the month. Most of them came from the Funway area. That's better than I had done for any other month ever.
