Magazine or Not Discussion

And you can do that here. Off fishing topic and off the wall subjects and plain bitch sessions. Sometimes you just need to have an outlet. Only registered users can see this forum.

Magazine or Not Discussion

Post by Ken G »

I have not sent out a blanket email announcing that this is up and running and I have no intention of doing that. You can spread the word if you want.

People will find their way back or they won't, up to them. Same with any newbies.

Nick already proved to me that he can't read anything first that says:

You better read this before you even think of clicking on anything else.

:D

There are only 28 members here now. I deleted nearly half of them before opening it up again just for the hell of it. Based on what I read, most of you are some of the best anglers/writers/personalities in the area. It's up to you to do with this whatever you want. Run rampant picking on everyone else, place to get away from everyone else, swap trade secrets on fishing spots, all up to you...

This will be the only forum I participate on from now on. I've shut down everything on WCF and CTA. No pm's, no email contact, done with them.

I've also unsubscribed from all of you on Facebook. Too much information. Too many status updates, too many email notifications about them, I'm brain tired. If you have a Facebook Page, that's how I'll keep up with what you're doing. My page tracks your page. But no more personal shit.

Anyway, while I was typing this, he reappeared. So there you go.

You would make one hell of a good hermit. Unfortunately nobody would know.

Why do you think I got rid of my "Ed Schmitt" Facebook page? Too much personal shit flying around all over the place and somebody took advantage of that.

If you still keep up with the FSA Fan Page, you won't be bothered much, but what I do post will be worth the read. I hope. Wish Bob would return an email one of these days.... I've sent him a few stories and I can't keep going to BPS to check for the latest Notebook just to see if my stuff is in there. I guess the other stuff is decent reading material, but I am about sick of the South Side Muskie Hawks and Arlington Anglers.

This winter has taken it's toll on me with all the info. It's always got to me, just worse this time. Time to back off on all that.

Good luck trying to get a hold of Bob. He's notoriously bad at that. I don't know how or why he keeps that alive lately. Sure doesn't seem like he's putting in too much effort. Midwest Outdoors is a waste, HO isn't bad. I was somewhat impressed by Illinois Outdoor News. Not sure why. They have a writer named Les Winkeler that I like, and a couple others weren't bad.

Not too many other outlets around here. If I knew how to close a sale on advertising, we should start our own. Never could be a closer though. I suck at it.

We should move this part out of the Kank forum............

Move it? Who will complain? lol (I know)

Email me your thoughts. Just to get the brain juices bubbling, my Dad sold advertising for 30 years, and in print no less. He's been out of work for 2 years now. Maybe we can figure something out.

Ed, easiest way...tell your dad to contact Maciulis and make him an offer to buy it.

Redesign the cover, run with it from there.

I've had a magazine like format sitting on my computer for a decade that I've never done anything with. Is another one really needed? Sure seems like the bulk of the existing ones have virtually nothing to do with northern Illinois.

My Dad would never go for that, he barely has enough money to live on, and his retirement money is gone since he had to pull that in order to survive while out of work.

If you have a magazine format ready to go lets make it an E-mag and do it right. If you can give me an outline I can create the design. My Dad can sell ad space, we have writers to provide content.... That's it, then all we need is the motivation to get started.

Why I'll never do it. Left on Facebook the other day:

When it comes to the "Outdoors" some people get it and some just don't.......
You Guys that get it , (Cory ,Andrew ,Don&Jim, Chauncey,Dale) keep up the great work

There's enough of this kind of writing out there. Anything I do won't get read. I live in the wrong state.

Spring Fishing Techniques in Illinois - About 201,000,000 results. Took 0.40 seconds to find them.

Which is perfect Ken. We do not need another magazine out there with tips and tricks to catching the big ones. I think more and more people are looking to outdoor recreation to spend time with family and friends since it is cheaper. One of the best wanderer/writers is Ken and I think he probably knows not on the Fox River, but the majority of the woods surrounding it better than most of us know our home water. Our blogs do not just showcase our catching abilities and how we are doing it, most of the time they have story to accompany the pictures of everything outdoors.
I know most of you here do not fly fish, but there are so many up and coming e-magazines these days that are not like your typical tips and tricks. They tell stories from the past and present, have amazing photography, and they relate to everyone. I think a general magazine like this, not just centralized around one specific style could go a long way. Then to make it state specific with the once in a while out of state information could go a long way.

Just a thought.
