Memorial Day Weekend Prospects

Post by Ken G »

If I had all the time in the world and more money than God (just to pay for the gas) I would spend the next 3 days leisurely fishing long stretches of the Apple River. Mid day I would take a nap in the shade of a bluff or one of the many trees that line the shore. The rest of the time would be spent fishing. Going by the river gauges, the Apple is about as good as it gets.

But I don't have much of either so if I get out at all, it will be on the Fox somewhere. All week the Fox water levels have been inching there way down and the last time I checked it seems to have stalled at just above 1300 cfs. That's pretty good and let's me wade just about anywhere I feel like. Luckily I know the spots to not go through even at 1300 cfs. In the right place, that kind of current can still take you off your feet. Or at least knock you down.

Pretty much know that from experience.

The Kankakee would be a good option. It was flowing at just above 4000 cfs last time I looked. I'm most comfortable going pretty much anywhere on that river when it's flowing under 2000. But 4000 gives you a lot of water to walk around in, you just have to be careful.

The creeks that feed into all the rivers seem pretty much back to normal and any one picked should be good.

Though I never check the DuPage gauge, I drive over it twice a day. Was looking a little high today, but structure was making itself apparent so it too is getting close to normal.

So many choices. Now I just have to wring a few hours out of this long weekend to give one of them a try.
