I went out after the rain to a nearby creek, fished for about an hour. The earlier downpours muddied it a bit and raised it a bit. It wasn't awful conditions, but the fish apparently didn't like it.

Put a big bladed safety pin spinner on the jig just for the extra noise and got to see three smallies smack at it. The largest seemed around 14 inches. That made it worth it.

Then I got rained on enough to get damp and uncomfortable, hiked through grass as tall as me and got back to the car covered in slugs.

I hate slugs.

Got changed, got in the car and started driving away and there was a slug crawling up my shorts.

A long time ago I was laid up for a month. Cub games and nature shows on channel 11 as I lay on the floor all day. I got tired of watching animals mating. The last time I watched channel 11 while I was laid up was when they showed slugs mating. I knew at that point I would get up and moving around even if the pain was going to make me pass out. It was just disgusting.

Forgot my camera. Could have got some interesting slug shots.

I have a blanket in my car, more like a big heavy throw rug. It's been in a few cars over the last 10 or 12 years. I put it on the ground to stand on when changing in and out of my waders. Everyone should do this. Keeps rocks from poking holes in the neoprene boots of your waders.

This throw rug has been through hell. Some of the things that have laid upon it are pheasant, squirrels, ducks, geese, wide variety of fish, a deer and a wide variety of other dead things.

It's never been washed. Never really thought it needed it.

While on the ground at Big Rock it soaked up a fair amount of water from the saturated ground. No big deal. It's done this before. It dries in a day or two.

I got in the car this morning. Kind of didn't smell very nice. That's unusual. The car generally doesn't smell all that good anyway, but considering I never take my fishing stuff out of it during the warmer months, a certain odor is expected.

Di comes home from work, wants to go out to dinner. Take my car.

Her nose wrinkles.

"Something is dead in here."

I don't think so. It's probably just a few rotting slugs.

"No, that is rotting flesh. Something is definitely dead in here."

We go out to eat.

When we get home I empty the back of the car. Remember, this is a small SUV, not something with a trunk.

The rug had died. I guess 10 or 12 years of accumulated dead things bleeding all over it finally did it in. Took some washing to get the smell off my hands. Rug is drying out in the garage which now doesn't smell very good either. No, the rug didn't get washed. I'm sure once it dries it will be just fine and resume it's rightful place back in my car.

Turned my waders inside out, I always dry the insides first. Still soaked, a few dead slugs stuck to them. That probably didn't help matters much.

Now I wonder about the other rug in there. It's only been 8 or 9 years for that one.

I knew a guy once that kept a blanket in his car for emergencies and what-not. Turns out he also used it for "picnics" ( ) with his girlfriends.........

Yeah, I wish he would have told me he never washed it before he let me use it to dry off after falling in the lake. We are not friends anymore.


Ken, I think the washing was long overdue.

I really should shampoo all the carpeting in the car.
Never was much of car appearance person. I keep the moving parts in good shape.

My idea of washing the car is going out between heavy rains and wiping it down with a rag. Next heavy rain coming through rinses it.

Soap would take the protective layer of grime off the surface.

My Mom would drag me around by my ear and make me clean it up so as not to offend my wife again. She absolutely loves that woman......


Frankly I'm impressed your wife was able to retain her appetite after the ride in your corpse-encrusted hearse.

Helps to drive with the windows open and she smokes.

You don't notice it as much then.

I'm 3 times 7, my parents gave up on telling me what to do a long time ago.
