OK, my lovely girlfriend solved this for us(and she used the term “for us dumbshits”), shes a high school math teacher.
I’d like to see her navigate through a river and find fish…hahaha.
Through dimensional analysis she came up with an easy formula to calculate cubic feet per second to miles per hour. It makes sense to me now, thanks to her.
You first need to find the cube root of the rate per second. Example, (and keeping the #’s easy) the cubic root of 729cfs is 9. 9 x 60seconds x 60minutes / 5280ft = 6.13mph
To simplify, take the cube root of cfs, multiply by 0.6818 and you get mph.
500cfs =5.4mph
1000cfs= 6.8mph
2000cfs= 8.5mph
3000cfs= 9.8mph
4500cfs= 11.2mph
20000cfs= 18.5mph
I wish i was fishing more, tacklebox.. I'll be in DW's smallie park this Monday morning.

Re: 8/12/09 River Level
I can read it all I want, but just like in school, if I don't sit down and figure a few out for myself, I'll never get it.
I was ADD before they coined the phrase.
Tell your girlfriend all the dumbshits say thanks.
She sounds like my wife. How come when it comes to anything to do with fishing it's a waste of time and we are some how inferior to all other people on earth. Even people that follow lacrosse.
I mean, look at what we all just learned? AND we know how that new found way to determine the speed of a river relates to where a fish will be sitting in wide expanses of water AND we also know just what to use to catch that fish.
Tell her to try doing that, ha.

Bah! What's with all this cubic foot crap? I just go down look at the river and say...Yup I can do that!=)
Bout time you came back to Darthland

After looking at the answer to this stupid question I asked, I have to agree with your girlfriend Con. We are right on the cutting edge of Dumbshitdom. I was too busy looking at my math teachers boobies when all that squares and cubes thing was going on. I was more focused on round thingies. HHHaau HHHaau (thanks Butthead).
Now that the veil has been lifted, wow, that river moves faster than I thought.
Darth has it right though. Just do it.
Glad to hear you're finally getting out Con.

Anyone have the link to that document that has the South Elgin CFS conversions from height to CFS? I formatted and reinstalled windows, but forgot to backup my bookmarks in Firefox and lost it. Would appreciate some help. I thought it was on this site where it was linked to, but can't find it.
