Fox River Dayton Dam to Ottawa next week?

Post by SeanL »

Hello everyone-

I just registered on this site and have been browsing around your reports and they are great! I recognize a few of you and you might recognize me as "Big10Seaner" on a few other fishing sites. Anyways, I'm thinking about taking my canoe out next week and launching below Dayton Dam and floating down to Ottawa. It's a stretch I've been afraid to wade (too much muddy areas) and too shallow to get up into with my boat. I recently got my canoe back out of storage so it's ready to go. It's supposed to be pretty good smallie fishing from what I've heard from the few guys that do get up there. Would anyone be interested? I'm not working right now so any day would work for me.

Oh, and here's a picture from my last wade outing on the IL river:

You can never fish the same river twice, by the time you get back it's not the same river.

Sean, IDNR sources told me years ago that the biggest smallies in the Fox are in that stretch of the river.
Take your time, pick apart the bluffs and be careful. Hopefully you're getting out on the north side of the Illinois. A canoe on that river even a short distance would creep me out.

Darth, nude model at the local art school? One way to meet young women.

Edit: Screwed up that joke. Note to self. Learn to proof read.

Ken,

That's encouraging to hear! I usually fish towards Marseilles dam area (on the Illinois) which is where a lot of fish are stocked, there are some bigguns up that way as well. As far as getting out, I was planning on getting out while still on the Fox at the little park they have the boat ramps at. I wouldn't take a canoe on the Illinois River either. I'll try to pick out a day here as soon as I can, Tuesday could probably work for me.

It looks like I might not get out until at least Wednesday or even Thursday- these nightly lows dipping into the low 40s/high 30s are making me afraid to go early am.

Got out this morning for a couple of hours since things have slowed down at work. It really wasn't that bad, except for the wind. Didn't even need gloves.
