Fox River Walleye 10-04-09 Night

Post by pezdek1 »

Got out last night with my Dad to our little walleye hole on the Fox. Fished from 7pm-9:45pm. Water is starting to cool down significantly, but still needs to get colder for the walleye bite to get real hot and heavy. My Dad managed one smallie about 14 inches right when we got in the water, and I managed a couple decent walleye about 20 inches and 2 or 3 pounds apiece. Smallie came on orange jig/twister and the two walleye on a baby bass Yo Zuri Pin's Minnow. Here are a couple pics. All fish released to fight another day.

Nice work Pez. I have been looking for some good walleye spots down by me. Unfortunately I don't think the substrate in the Montgomery/Oswego area is conducive to walleye reproduction. I just don't see the same rock/gravel areas that I know exist further north.

Keep me updated on your success, and I will do the same from down here.

btw, what size pin's was that: 2", 2 3/4", or 3 5/8" ?

Did you get your fish off the main channel near a gravel bar?

Lesson #2:

The pool upstream of the tracks by the Marathon Station up to the end of the island. Especially the west side under the tracks, only be careful there. Actually, all under the tracks, east to west. This was from August:

The pool off the flats, from the end of the island to the wires, the whole thing.
The pool upstream of the outflow, especially along the island where the channel runs.
The pool just down stream from Violet Patch park all the way down to that little park on the east that I can't remember the name of. Especially the west side toward the front of the pool. You'll see a bunch of boulders on the shore that the landowner put in.
From Mill Street all the way down to Route 30. The deeper channel more or less follows the west side. Be careful around the west side of Route 30.

That should keep you busy. :D :D

Figure it this way, These are the spots where I've tied into them. They have to be in between too if you find the right spots.

Nice Pez. Its gotten cooler alot quicker than last year. Hopefully the action will stay good well through November. I remember wearing short sleaves at Halloween last year.
You can never fish the same river twice, by the time you get back it's not the same river.

The Pin's I was using was the 3 5/8" - 1/4oz in Baby Bass color. I've used the 2 3/4" one as well and had just as much success with it. The purple, the baby bass, and the greenback are the three Pin's I use for the walleye in Fall, all in the
3 5/8" size. I prefer these as they're a little heavier at 1/4oz so I can cast farther. The area we fish is near a bridge, where one side is mostly mud with some chunk rock, and the other side is all rip-rap with big boulders stacked along the shoreline. The fish come in the main channel typically, with many hits coming right along the concrete pillars of the bridge. What I do is make a long cast up under the bridge, then right away give a big rip/sweep on the rod to get the bait to dive, then I'll let it sit and suspend in the current without moving it for 10 seconds or so, then rip it again, let it sit for 10 seconds, and keep repeating this until the bait is back to me. I've had hits within 10 feet in front of me where the fish must have followed it all the way from the bridge. Most my hits, though, come after the first big rip while the bait is just suspending in the current. The rest of the hits typically come as soon as I start moving the bait again 10 seconds after that first big rip on the rod. Hope this helps!!!

Ya, I'm kind of glad it got cooler earlier this year. The water should stay perfect for the walleyes all through October and into November. My last walleye outing on the Fox last year was the third week in November. By that point I probably could have fished longer, but the water got too cold to be in with the breathable waders lol. The water is right around 55 degrees or so where I'm fishing right now. The bite will probably shut down once the water is down to about 40 or so. Our last outing last year the water was 41. Yes, last Halloween it was 75 degrees and I took my daughters trick or treating in shorts and a t-shirt lol. It was the nicest Halloween we've had in a while, but I don't think this year is going to be like that.

On another good note, though, the fish are hitting hard, and fighting VERY hard. They're also very heavy. Both fish I caught last night had very good weight to them and hit/fought like freight trains. They're starting to fatten up quite well for the winter. :D The second one took about 5 minutes to get in and he was peeling drag. Hopefully I can get into a 30 incher this year :P

I've had some success into December but the bit slows down alot. They seem to like jigs more worked very slow, live baits helps too. And my goal this year is to top Dans fish, which was a fluke cause Dan doesnt know how to fish  I also have a couple more areas im going to be trying out this year.

And i fish the exact same way you do. Cast out give a good rip to get the lure down and just let is sweep downstream reeling any excess line giving some good rips every 5-10 seconds. My goto color is white, white ghost x-rap great lure.

I second the notion that Dan doesn't know how to catch fish. :P
