Michigan walleye

Post by Rob P »

Hit Lake Leelanau in No. Michigan over the weekend.
Its just west of Traverse City.
5 1/2 hr drive from the south burbs.

Well it rained buckets all weekend.
Wind 20+ and temps were 50 maybe, but i bet wind chills were 40's...
I wore 2 rain suits and long u thermax to fend off pneumonia.

Fished the weather anyways.
It was a weekend of longhours casting and partying at night with friends.
wind and waves can wear ya out, but it helps to catch fish.
(Like when you still feel the boat rocking driving home!)

Caught a ton of walleye but only 3 keepers of >15 inches.
We did catch every 14 1/2 and 14.75inch fish in the lake..

But thats fishing.

No pics.
Caught a bunch of pike and had biteoffs.
Had a nice pike pushing 25-28 and my buddy deleted it accidentally off the phone.
Too busy casting to snap pics of the eyes in the livewell.

Basically casted a firetiger smithwick about 20,000x from Friday to Sunday..
Nothing on a jig which was surprising.
Over all maybe we had numbers of fish but a few others caught more keepers.
We're still learning the lake and adding spots each time we go.

Ran out of time i wanted to troll spinners.
Tough to change when the bite is on the cranks.

We stay at a place with 6 cabins right on the lake.
We use 5 cabins for the 12-14 guys attending and 1 is the food/poker cabin.

This was my 3rd year up there for an annual trip.
We'll be back and actually more guys asked to join us.

OK KEN!
see i actually do fish.
If not then somebody else is using all my boat gas!
:D

I've fished from shore and seen some huge walleye come out there at night.
Mid November to Mid December weather depending.

I'd go one night to cast for a few hours.

Got some things on the calendar so i can't pick a specific date.

As it gets closer i'll know more.
I know a few guys who drive to cast for 2 hrs then drive home to our SW area..

Dan,

I have a trip to New Buffalo scheduled with another group for the end of November. When would you like to start heading over there to begin your hunt? I wouldn't mind making a few pre-trips and/or post trips to cover as much water and conditions as possible. I have read the old reports and seen what that area is capable of producing. If it makes a difference, I have a boat all ready to go that may help us get to spots and try different presentations. It's not meant for Lake Michigan salmon trolling, but Harbor fishing or walleye trolling situations are ideal. We can talk more if you're interested.

Shit, you can count me in for that too. I heard about it recently and it sounds like a lot of fun. Beer, BBQ, and nighttime fishing for eyes????
