Jake and I headed out in search of Smallmouths... we came up with only one. But we started our day in the Aux Sable Creek. Water was clear and low. We had plans to head to Mazon but I was at a bar last night and talked to a guy. He showed me some monster smallies; I asked him where he pulled them out and he said the Aux Sable Creek near the I&M.
So that made me choose that place. Enjoy the pics
Dupage River
The Smallies are making their beds already We seen a Hand full of busy guys.
We explored the area that I have been looking at for while and I am going to have to say its Perfect....
Jake has more photos. I am sure he will add them. But I lost 2 fish and landed one.. All on my homemade flies..

All that beautiful water and one fish. Odd.
I bet sunrise or sunset may have been better. Clear water + blue skies = generally no fish.
Was thinking about that part of the Aux Sable just today. Then I remember I've wanted to get to the Little Vermillion. Too many choices.

Ken, when you decide to hit the Little Vermillion let me know. I've looked around at ariels in the past and looks like a nice little river.
You can never fish the same river twice, by the time you get back it's not the same river.

Sam, based on your description, I think I know where you were. Been eye balling it in birds eye view. I wonder what's in that backwater. I imagine you can't wade in there.
I need to get a canoe.
Matt. I'll let you know.

I have fished that area more times than you can shake a stick at it.Nice smallie by the tree.Every flood that area changes.
That tree has been in three different positions in the river, next time it will be downstream.I have pictures of that tree when it was still standing on the point and there was a different tree in the middle facing upstream looking much like a cannon. When the mother goose is on her nest there is always a few smallie nests off to the side in two feet of water.I have caught that fish three years in a row including twice in one week.Last year that smallie taped out at 19 inches.
In the lake there are some huge largemouths up to six pounds that I can vouch for and also some nice crappies. Now that I have my kayak I may fish that lake more this year. When I get time to go through my pictures of the changes in that area I will post them.

Bill,
Last summer a guy and his dog in a canoe stop and talked to me. He told me about that back area and how golden it was. We started talking about fly fishing and I gave him a fly.. Was that you?

No,that wasn't me.I have been back there in a canoe but it was with a good friend of mine.It was one of those incredible days when we hammered smallies all day on topwater and stickworms. Not back there but upstream in the deep section.

Re: Aux Sable Creek and MY spot on the Dupage
Just ran across this thread; I fished that area once last year with a buddy and we did AWESOME!! It is a great stretch. Tried getting down there recently but the water was too fast and high for me to try to make my way around by myself. Rather be safe than sorry on the river. This is one of the spots on my list for this weekend. I'm wishing I had a kayak or canoe to get in that backwater.
