If this is what you saw, then it's a north american water snake.

They are everywhere this time of year. I've had them fall out of the trees and land on me while out wading.
Saw the mention of cottonmouth. I really doubt it. Far as I know the only poisonous snakes are along the Mississippi River and even that is debatable.
