Dupage River 7/20/10

East and West Branches plus the main stem, not much to look at sometimes, but an astonishing fishery.

Dupage River 7/20/10

Post by smallmouthfisher »

I have not reported in a while so here we go. Today I had plans to fish with BIG MIKE... but do to the storms that were due in this morning. Mike I guess was scared of storms so he didn't show. I had the river to myself this morning. I started around 6am and it was very cloudy and cooler. I started in shorewood and worked my way up to hammel woods dam and then down stream to another dam.

I was geared up with my new fly vest... which I love and my 5wt. I was trying out my new weedless poppers being there is alot of weeds but tons of
fishing holding behind them. When I got to the river there were boils and fish surfacing everywhere. I got in the river and made my way..I was working my popper on the shorelines and working them my way nice and slow.. I shit you not for the first 10 minutes I had a huge strikes each cast.

I caught a total of 30+ fish.. being you all make fun of me with all my "bait" photos I wont post them all but the fish ran from 12-16inches. Never the less fun ass hell...

I did manage to have a killer fish on and I thought it was a huge smallmouth but it was a really nice largemouth. I landed 5 largemouths today..All on the "THE GOLDEN SHOWER"

But here is what most fish looked like

Next time I will get out will be Sunday so you should hear from me soon..

I honestly don't know why I keep wasting my time on the Fox. I'll have to stop doing that.

Bets will be taken that I get skunked.

The prodigal son returns.....

You have got to be one of the most accomplished local fly-fisherman I have ever read reports from. Nice work Sam.

How long has it been since you wandered the Dupe?

It's been...... hmm... 19ish years for me...... I worked near it when I was in High School and fished it's banks and some of the backwaters. However it's been nearly twenty years since I waded it.

You say you drive over it everyday right? Me too.

The next time my wife tells me she doesn't feel like cooking dinner I am stopping on my way home. Probably somewhere just South of the bridge at Washington and Bailey since that was always my favorite stretch. There used to be an old foot bridge nearly in a straight line from where 87th st. ends at Washington. I wonder if it's still there......

I hit it four times so far this year. Back in April maybe May, can't remember.
Stopped there a couple of weeks ago but more in Naperville. My timing has been off and so has the fishing.
Mornings and evenings are best and I don't have time for either. Or don't make the time.

The job that had me driving over it every day ended back on May 1st.

Don't have a clue as to why I don't hit it more often. Lazy maybe. Hoping the Fox will kick in maybe. Who knows.
