Hey, does anybody know about what time the suckers start spawning? I want to hit poplar creek for some suckers, but I don't know when.

Re: Suckers

They're usually one of the first up the creeks to spawn. I remember not being able to catch anything else when they're around because they take over. I've seen white suckers and hundreds of quillbacks then. They're pretty much oblivious to everything at that point and I've had them swim into my legs.

Everything is temperature driven, so some time in April would be the best time to start looking for them. I would go at least once a week to see.

Years ago below where the south Batavia dam was, I was there when there were so many quillbacks migrating up the Fox that it looked like the water was boiling in the shallower areas. One kid that used to post a lot actually would run up to them and just scoop them up out of the water with his bare hands.

Haven't seen it but been told that sucker spawn is some shade of green. So if you use something small and green, you might not only catch suckers, but the other predators follow behind them eating their eggs. Kind of like the trout and salmon runs.

I've used these small red or black, about 2 inches long, worms fished on a small hook with some split shot. Let it sit on the bottom where they're congregating. Suckers, quillbacks and carp will all eventually suck them up, but you have to be patient.

Afterall, they're there for the sex not the food so much.

I do know that if you hook into white suckers, the fight is a lot like a steelhead. I was shocked when they pulled so hard and then shot straight out of the water.
